Feature 1

Create breathtaking planet-scale environments in Blender.

Feature 1

Next-Level World Building in Blender

PlanetSet is an addon for Blender that enables the creation of massive and detailed environments. It is the only tool of its kind for Blender that provides the technical foundations for planet-scale landscapes, atmosphere and clouds.

Release Notes

v2025.1

Version 2025.1 (Coming Soon)

  • Atmosphere rendering is significantly better with the Blender 4.4 Cycles updates:
    • The physical atmosphere now renders correctly over large, sparse volumes, achieving close results to the analytical Nishita sky texture.
    • Significant improvements in water aerosols rendering with low-density, highly-anisoptropic media.
    • The atmosphere and cloud shaders now leverage the new phase functions (Rayleigh and Mie) natively in Cycles.
  • Procedural stars are now rendered with the Physical Atmosphere enabled and are parameterisable through the Star Panel.
  • Pattern Noise geometry node preset. Stamps image textures randomly for more interesting fractal textures.
  • Added missing node presets to the node_presets.blend file.
  • Sky and atmosphere parameters not updating correctly over key frames.
  • Improved the arrangement of the atmosphere & sky panel UI.
  • Cycles settings now change when initilializing a planet by default (can be turned off in the addon preferences).
  • PlanetSet should now register as an extension.
  • Some minor optimisations to the terrain system.
  • The PlanetSet Cycles settings configuration is faster and better suited to atmosphere rendering.
Full Scale Spectral Atmosphere

Full Scale Spectral Atmosphere

PlanetSet offers the most realistic sky model of the Earth available for Blender, simulating the effects of Rayleigh, Mie and Ozone scattering. The atmosphere is part of the scene, naturally producing haze, sun shafts and bloom.

Planet-Scale Scenes

PlanetSet uses a powerful geometry nodes terrain workflow leveraging an adaptive tessellation system (not to be confused with Cycles adaptive subdivision) which enables practically infinite landscapes at very high detail by preserving geometric detail in screenspace.

Feature 3

Made for Cycles

PlanetSet is designed for high quality path-traced renders, leveraging the powerful Cycles render engine to produce physically accurate images.

Clouds

Example 4

Cloud Layers

Create vast cloudscapes using cloud layer objects, with parameters for altitude, radius and falloff.

Example 4

Preset Appearances

Choose from a selection of cloud layer noise patterns to achieve cumulus, stratus, cirrus formations and more.

Example 5

Infinite Cloudscapes

Clouds are fully procedural and infinite, you can scale cloud layers as large as you like. PlanetSet automatically accounts for the curvature of the planet in cloud layers.

Example 4

Cloud Shading

Clouds in PlanetSet are fully volumetric and simulated, shaded using the Mie scattering effect of water droplets.

Example 4

Versatile

Cloud layers come with an abundance of parameters.

Water

Example 4

Oceans

Create oceans in one click that are rendered all the way to the horizon and support custom micropolygon displacement.

Example 4

Custom Water Bodies

Use custom meshes as waterbodies to create lakes, ponds and rivers.

Example 4
Example 5

Water Displacement

Water bodies can be displaced using geometry nodes for effects like waves and currents, with micropolygon detail.

Example 5

Advanced Water Shader

PlanetSet comes with a versatile water shader, with controls for coloring, ripples, edge foam, sedimentation and transparency. Ripples are uniquely implemented to correctly render surface pertubations in the far distance.

Instancing

Example 4

Scattering Layers

Scatter millions of objects with controls for: Clumping, altitude falloff, altitude masking, size variation, slope distribution, surface alignment and more...

Example 4

Frustrum Culling

Only instance objects inside the camera frustrum.

Free to Learn

PlanetSet has a steep learning curve, especially when it comes to creating terrains with geometry nodes. It's free for personal use and learning, but if you find it helpful, please consider supporting us by purchasing a Hobbyist or Professional license. :)

Before You Buy

PlanetSet is for Cycles rendering only. It is not designed to work with Eevee.
PlanetSet works with CPU and GPU Cycles rendering.
Cloud shaders are computationally demanding, even on high-spec GPUs, and this is largely unavoidable for photorealistic clouds. PlanetSet has preview settings available to make things faster while working in the viewport.

System Requirements
